I cut this recipe out of a Woman’s Day magazine about forty years ago and it has been a family favorite ever since.

BETTY BROWNS

Ingredients:

½ cup melted unsalted butter

1 cup granulated white sugar

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 egg

1 teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

2 large apples, peeled and finely chopped

½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease an 8x8x2 inch pan.

Put first seven ingredients in a large bowl and mix until smooth. Stir in apples and walnuts.  Turn mixture into the greased pan. Smooth with spatula. Place on the center rack of the oven. Cook 40 to 45 minutes or until the mixture leaves the sides of the pan and a cake tester comes out clean.  Cool in pan on a wire rack.  When completely cold cut into 16 squares.  If you cut while still warm the squares will fall apart.

Suggested Tea Pairings:

Cinnamon Apple Fruit Blend

Darjeeling

Snickerdoodle

Kathmandu Green
